Run Club Spotlight: Slow & Steady Run Club

A lot of run clubs break out into groups of fast, faster, and fastest before they take off on their run, but that is not the case for the subject of today’s Run Club Spotlight. The Slow & Steady Run Club is a Kalorama-based group that prefers to keep their runs easy. Because, after all, slow and steady wins the race. We sat down with them to learn what makes their group tick.

When/Where does the group meet?

We meet Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in Kalorama Park in NW, and we sometimes host weekend long runs.

What makes the Slow & Steady Run Club different from other running groups?

We're one of the few co-ed slower run groups in the area. And by slow, we're talking a 11:30-12:30 min/mile average pace.

What is the mix of runners and who thrives in your run club?

All are welcome at Slow & Steady! We're a co-ed crew that comes from all over the DMV. Some of our runners have completed half marathons, marathons and even triathlons. Other runners are brand new to the sport and are seeing what this "running thing" is all about. Most of our runners are in their 20s and 30s, but all ages and abilities are welcome.

We typically have 15-25 people on any given day. We like to have fun, laugh a lot, and believe that slow and steady really does win the race. Our community is very friendly and welcoming.

Walk us through a typical run.

Meet us at the Kalorama Park flag pole. We'll chat for a bit before we circle up, do some stretches, and start with introductions and a question of the day. We run about 2-3 miles on our Wednesday runs (usually closer to 2.5 miles) and end right where we started. After, we'll hang out and chat some more or grab a treat nearby.

What should first-timers know before showing up to your run club?

Make sure you check our Instagram page for the latest (in case there are any changes due to weather). You're welcome to just show up! There isn't a bag drop so prepare accordingly.

However, there is now a bathroom at the park, which is exciting!

Share a memorable moment, tradition, or story that captures what your group is all about.

Every summer, we host the Slow & Steady Games, which is a field-day style event that brings out some (friendly) competition. Last year, one of the events involved catching as many marshmallows in your mouth as you can -- it's hilarious to watch. The winning team goes home with a prize. People come to WIN, but we also have so much fun!

Our members are the best part of Slow & Steady! They love the community. They love the friendships they've made. They love the fun that we have together.
