The Rivers & Rails Marathon is a destination running weekend rooted in landscape, history, and connection. Centered in historic Brunswick, Maryland, the experience reaches into nearby Harpers Ferry and Bolivar, West Virginia—where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet and the rail lines that helped shape America still run.
Along the way, runners will encounter scenic stretches of the C&O Canal Towpath, cross iconic bridges linking states and stories, and pass through ground steeped in American history—including landscapes that played a pivotal role during the Civil War, as well as brief touches of the Appalachian Trail. This is a place where rivers, railroads, and history converge in a way few courses can offer.
The weekend features a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and a challenging 5k, welcoming runners of all levels. Thoughtfully designed to highlight the region’s character, Rivers & Rails is more than a race—it’s an immersive journey through natural beauty, rich heritage, and the enduring spirit of the places it connects.
Marathon: Cross the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers twice each while exploring Brunswick, Harpers Ferry, and Bolivar. SEVEN HOUR CUTOFF!
Half Marathon: Cross the Potomac River twice. Does not include the Bolivar section. SEVEN HOUR CUTOFF!
Veterans Challenge 5K: Stays entirely within the city of Brunswick. Does not use the C&O Canal Towpath and features a challenging, hilly course honoring those who have served.
The marathon and half marathon will be USATF-certified courses beginning near the entrance to the C&O Canal Towpath. No course crosses railroad tracks, but trains are a part of life in Brunswick and may affect travel to and from the event. We will be offering advice to help you plan accordingly.
The Veterans Challenge 5K starts and finishes on E. Potomac Street adjacent to Square Corner Park.
