DC MBT Trail Expands to Takoma

Wednesday, November 12, marked the ribbon-cutting for a 1.7-mile extension of the DC portion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail from Fort Totten to Takoma, a segment that's been years in the making and represents one of the final puzzle pieces in connecting Union Station all the way to Silver Spring.

Mayor Muriel Bowser joined DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum and a crowd of eager trail users to christen the new pavement.

"Expanding the MBT has been a priority since day one," Bowser said, according to WJLA. "With the new Fort Totten to Takoma section, we’re delivering on our promise to the community, expanding access to one of DC’s favorite trails, and giving Washingtonians one more way to move around the city."

For those keeping score at home: the MBT now flows nearly uninterrupted for eight miles through the District, weaving through Fort Totten, Takoma, Manor Park, and Riggs Park. According to the Mayor’s office, more than 5,000 people use this trail daily.
