Run Club Spotlight: Bears on the Run DC

Finding community can be hard, and that is what makes run clubs such a great way to get out and meet people who share your interests. That’s the goal for Bears on the Run DC, a new group aiming to make an inclusive running community for those LBGTQIA+ runners who identify as bears, a friend, or an ally. We chatted with founder Justin Lopez to learn about his group and how runners can get involved.

When/Where does the group meet?

Bears on the Run DC is just kicking off, so we're experimenting with days of the weeks and times of the day.

Right now, we have four runs coming up! We meet anywhere from Red Bear Brewing Co., Eastern Market Metro Stop, Pitchers, or the National Mall. We hope to develop a more consistent schedule to be as accessible to folks who would like to run!

What makes the Bears on the Run different from other running groups?

Although there are a lot of inclusive running clubs in DC, this one is catered to LGBTQIA+ folx who either identify as bears or our allies. We don't fit the stereotypical body type of runners; however, we most certainly are powerful runners and movers. We are inclusive, fun, and social. We want to ensure that every pace has a place in our club - specifically, for gay men that identify within the bear community. Bigger boys can move, and we love moving with our allies as well :) We like to have fun and we're starting runs with social events after.

What is the mix of runners and who thrives in your run club?

From beginners to advanced runners, everyone has a place in the club. Anyone who shows up to let loose and have a good time will be in good company. We're supportive and a good time!

Walk us through a typical run.

Before each run, there is a 15-minute stretching period. Next, there's a run overview of the course, followed by any announcements. The running begins, where you can choose to go at your own pace.

After, we take pictures and either head home or go to a post-run social event.

Do you do anything social before or after runs?

Right now, we're offering post-run socials. Our first one is on July 7 at Red Bear Brewing Co. and our second one is on July 16 at Pitchers.

What should first-timers know before showing up?

First timers should follow our IG @botrdc, join our Strava Club, and subscribe to our WhatsApp community. You should RSVP for runs within the Strava Club, and show up on time for stretching and announcements. You can also fill out our new member form here.

We get started promptly 15 minutes after our stretching period. Folks should show up as they are with whatever they would typically wear for moderate walking/running.

How can people find Bears on the Run DC and get involved?

Instagram, Strava, and WhatsApp. You can also RSVP for upcoming runs here.
