Run Club Spotlight: Run Club Domestique

I meet a lot of run clubs as part of this blog, and the ones having the most fun seem to be the ones who find their niche. That is the case with Run Club Domestique, a Friday evening crew that was founded on a simple principle: combine the discipline of running with the enjoyment of good company and great wine. Their routes start and end at a local wine store, Domestique, offering a refreshing conclusion to every run.

They are also set to host a fall marathon from a Reston toast bar to a Washington wine shop.

When/Where does the group meet?

We meet every Friday at 6:45 pm at Domestique Wines.

What makes the Run Club Domestique different from other running groups?

We get together during happy hour in the country's thirstiest city, and we finish our runs with chilled wines!

What is the mix of runners and who thrives in your run club?

It's truly diverse for such a small group. We're a mild hybrid of Nike Run Club and Northeast Track Club. We range from 5-20 runners on any given Friday, and the type of runner who thrives is a social runner who loves wine. We are VERY chill, very casual, all paces, small, intimate, cozy, friendly, inclusive.

Walk us through a typical run.

We meet inside the wine store, introduce the routes, remind participants of the wine discounts, etc. When we finish, we get a brief intro on the wines, then get our wine glasses and pours. We then spend the rest of the time socializing until 8:00 when they boot us out!

What should first-timers know before showing up to your run club?

I would advise looking over our waiver and code of conduct language on our website. They can bring what they want as there'll be storage at the store. Other than that, show up! No need to register or RSVP.

What do current members say they love most about running with you?

I think mostly the niche in us being a Friday club that drinks wine after. It's quite unique. We had a fun festive Halloween costume run! We're going to have a crop top workshop soon, too.
