Best Running Playlists 2026: DC Bands Mix Plus an All-Purpose Running Playlist
The only question on my mind when I am lacing up for my morning miles is whether this is a music, podcast, or audiobook run. If I am going out for speedwork or hill repeats, I usually go with an up-beat playlist that makes me forget how miserable the humidity makes everything. Listening to the music you like can help improve your endurance, strength, and speed.
When it comes to jamming out while running, research from the University of Jyväskylä shows that letting exercises choose their own music can boost endurance by nearly 20% without making the workout feel any tougher. Most runners stick to a higher bpm range on average, but it all depends on your preference, experience, and effort.
I have two lists for you today to try out on your next run.
The first, populated by bands that got their start here in D.C., arranged to build from an easy warmup mile through your hardest push. Start with Chocolate City and Trouble Funk while you're finding your legs, let Fugazi and Dismemberment Plan carry you into tempo pace, then hit Bad Brains and S.O.A. when you're ready to empty the tank on the hills of Rock Creek.
The second list is full of my general favorites, songs that I have saved from different running playlists over the years.
